Nothing for Any Purpose
Nothing for Any
Purpose is a body of work created with an interest in language, visible
intentions, accidental mutations, and hidden meanings. The work uses handmade lace-letters
that visibly degrade over time and also over the length of each piece in the
series. Within the pattern of letters
stands a second, hidden message that is realized as a series of circles and
squares. The ones and zeros are of
a digitally encoded secret message where circles are ones and squares are zeros. Each piece within the body of work is
shown as a series of diptychs ranging from eight to sixteen panels that either
allows the text to degrade into nothing or to evolve into full legibility.
The beginning pieces within Nothing for Any Purpose use strategically chosen text from both
Intelligent Design and Evolutionary theories, pitting one against the other in
a visible vs. hidden message dominance.
The quotes are ambiguous, allowing the viewer the space for various
interpretations. Visually,
the letters mimic the intentions behind each theory, either evolving into words
or breaking down into an illegible string of shapes.
